I love bread……it is probably my most favorite food besides eggs of course. There is something that is very comforting about bread especially when it is slathered in butter and I don’t do that very often but I did put butter all over this naan and it was absolutely amazing!
My favorite kind of bread is homemade you know the kind you roll between your hands, get up early and get it done kind of bread.
If you say you don’ t like naan and you haven’t tasted it yet you don’t know what you’re missing. I promise you if you love bread and the naan is well prepared you will love it!
This was my first attempt at making naan with a recipe my Twitter Friend RebeccaSubbiah RD from Chow & Chatter recommended her friend Perna’s blog it is called Indian Simmer. This is why you all need to get on Twitter you make some amazing connections! You can always follow me at LilSubHomestead and I will follow you back. Both of these ladies have beautiful food blogs and the recipes look amazing and I know you will agree! One of the reasons I have been hesitant to try making naan is that some of the recipes look so complicated. You know how I like to keep things simple 😉
However I need not fear because Prerna breaks her recipe down step by step and it’s actually super simple the biggest hurdle I had to get through was the one in my mind. Isn’t that the way it always is when trying something new? My pictures are not nearly as beautiful as hers but I am also not posting the recipe since it is not my recipe and I am so thankful she posted such an easy to understand blog post about how to make naan and I know with practice I will get better. My post is really just more of a documentation of how I did with my first attempt at making this delicious bread and if you think you can’t make it just give it a try! So go to Prerna’s site Indian Simmer if you want the recipe for her amazing naan.
I will be honest and say my first attempt was a bit clumsy and the dough was really really sticky but I was determined and had an end product that I quite enjoyed! I do think I lost some of the dough because of the stickiness but it was still so delicious! I would make this exact recipe again!
I also really liked that she used yogurt instead of yeast for the rising agent but my husband did not think it made it rise as much as it should but I liked the denseness and the slight chewiness. I do think as I practice my recipe will get lighter I may have kneaded the dough too long. I also noticed I didn’t let mine get as dark as hers but that may be a preference on my part I like them lightly golden and if you notice in the picture at the top of the post there is some greenness which is due to the garlic and olive oil I spread on one side of each of the naan when you got to her blog you will see the directions to do that.
On a final note I used a cast iron skillet to cook mine on I also like that you don’t really add additional oil to cook the naan in so it’s healthier although I did use some oil to cook it with especially where I mixed the crushed garlic and a little olive oil together and brushed on the backs of each naan before they went on the skillet.
So glad you stopped in today and you know my motto…”If you have a home you’re a homesteader!” Because homesteading yes while it is exciting and adventuresome to have a huge spread homesteading is a state of mind! Making do with what you have, forging new territory, and being creative with your resources which trust me I have learned you readers have plenty and I always look forward to hearing your ideas and what all of you are doing.
So who has been making bread recently and does anyone have any suggestions for me to keep the dough from getting so sticky?
I hope all of you have had a wonderful Sunday! Everyone celebrates their Sunday’s differently but take joy in whatever you do.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been buying naan and knew it was way over priced. Won’t be doing that anymore.
Colleen I love naan and I have been buying it at Trader Joes but I agree it is too simple all I have to do is set aside a little bit of time….I am glad you enjoyed the post and isn’t Prerna’s site amazing and she kept it simple too!
Your naan looks great! Congrats! I found a recipe from Monsoon Spice.com and it works great every time. I serve it with homemade hummus, kalamata olives and cherry tomatoes, oh and with butter, lots and lots of butter! You’re right, homemade bread is heaven.
