I love to start my day out with a Smoothie in the morning besides being creamy and delicious it’s a healthy start to the day too. I will break down the components for the smoothie but I also will break down why this smoothie in particular is so healthy!
Bananas
Bananas are packed with Vitamin B6 and potassium and let’s not forget fiber. They have also been touted as a Blood Pressure reducer as well. If you can not eat bananas because of blood sugar issues you can make this smoothie with any other fruit although this recipe would be best substituted with blueberries or peaches in my opinion.
Oatmeal
Now lately Oats have been getting kind of mixed reviews from the “Grain Free” movement but I say all things in moderation unless you absolutely cannot eat oats. I would toss oats into a smoothie once or twice a week plus I love the taste!
Oats have been shown to lower cholesterol I also like the fact that they fill me up so the smoothie is more satisfying!
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is hands down a spice to have in your cabinet for the obvious fact that it makes everything taste delicious just about but also for the powerful effect it has on keeping blood sugar levels stable and it has anti -microbial properties too!
Yogurt
Most brands of yogurt have beneficial bacteria for your body just make sure it says “Live Active Cultures” on your container that you purchase unless you make your own and then you will know for sure. Yogurt is loaded with vitamins in particular B12 which is what keeps your central nervous system running smoothly and helps your body maintain red blood cells. I have had periods in my life where I have given up milk and or cheese but I would never give up yogurt or eggs those our two dairy products that in my opinion are too beneficial not to have in our diet.
Honey
Sweeteners are always optional but I have to tell you honey is a natural sweetener that even diabetics don’t have to give up entirely. Recent research has shown that diabetics are even encouraged to add honey to their diet to help control blood sugar. As someone who has to watch their blood sugar this is good news! Add a tsp. or two of honey to this recipe and it just gives it that special something plus you will be adding raw enzymes and protecting your body from allergies. (Of course this is if you are buying or using Raw, Local, Honey)
Ingredients:
1 Banana
1 C. plain not fat yogurt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/3 C. oatmeal
1 or 2 tsp. of honey to taste
1 tsp. vanilla
Add milk for the desired consistency you like when it’s really hot outside I like to freeze the banana first and sometimes I throw in some ice cubes. I also try to put the oats in first so they get blended completely.
Whip cream is optional but not for me! What a great way to start the day basically this smoothie is almost like having your daily prescription of health in a cup!
Have a great day everyone!
Fondly,
