I think if I asked my kids would you rather have some orange powder and noodles they would always choose the option of my homemade mac n cheese however growing up they preferred the commercial boxed kind no matter what I did. I perservered though and they now love it when I make homemade mac n cheese even if it doesn’t look “bright orange”. Even this last time I made it my son was concerned their was not enough cheese in it and I promised him there is plenty of cheese in this just taste it and of course he loved it!
“Not Orange” Macaroni and Cheese
2 Cups whole milk
3 TBSP. butter
2 TBSP. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
3 eggs whipped
5 Cups elbow macaroni (salt the water)
3 Cups shredded cheddar cheese
3/4 C. cracker crumbs (I used club crackers and I just place mine in the blender)
Here is what the cracker crumbs look like.
Dash of Tabasco sauce
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook elbow macaroni and drain. Combine all ingredients except for the cracker crumbs and 2/3 of the cheddar cheese….don’t worry the butter will melt because the noodles are so hot. Once you place all of this in a greased 13 X9 pan (grease it with butter) then top it with 1/3 cup more cheese and then bread crumbs cover with foil and cook for 40 minutes. The last 10 minutes sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top so it will brown slightly if it needs to go a little longer that is fine.
This makes about 6 to 8 servings! Enjoy!
This is a special recipe I do not make every day so there is a lot of cheese in this you could easily cut this back and even throw other ingredients such as tuna and peas in here.
Now I wished I had a picture of the finished product but I was so tired and hungry we just ate it all before I realized I guess next time I could take a picture of an empty bowl!
Have a great Thursday everyone!

Mac and Cheese is the Handyman’s best dish. He makes it just for me. And if I had my way he’d make it every week!
Sounds delicious! Does he make it in the oven or on the stove?
Incredibly wonderful posts from an incredible person! The only unfortunate thing going on right now, is that I am yearning for Macaroni and Cheese now thanks to your scrumptious sounding recipe! Looking forward to learning more about all the cool things you post about here. 🙂 Pats to River.
Thanks Claudia I promise I will pass on your pats to River….Claudia I am wanting some more mac and cheese myself! Hope all is well with you and the fam! Glad you checked out my lil’ blog 🙂
Macaroni and cheese was one of my favourite things to eat after school when I was a child. It brings back memories. I haven’t eaten it in a while. It would be nice to make some homemade mac n cheese. The commerical brands always have extra unhealthy chemicals in them.
Homemade is the best. I like when extra ingredients like broccoli, tomato, and onions are added too
I love onions in my mac and cheese too! Thanks so much for stopping by!
Sounds yummy! I know what you mean about the orange cheese.
I know I think when they were younger it was the oranger the better 🙂
Great recipe! Brings back memories of the kids the first time they tried “real” spaghetti sauce At first, it was the home made sauce that won the award of being “weird” – but now – they ask for it!
Thanks it is funny how the kids acclimate over time……and yet balk at some new things the first time! 🙂
A few months ago I made macaroni cheese and everybody loved it. I am not a fan of those store bought kinds so when I decided to make I was convinced I will hate it (but I made it for my husband anyway). It turned out that the homemade actually tastes SO MUCH better!!!
Your recipe looks great especially the crackers crumbs. I need to try it 🙂
Thanks so much! The crackers really do add something to it….of course I have not met a homemade mac n cheese I didn’t like 😉
