Spring Cleaning On The Homestead
I wanted to get to planting this past weekend…….I’m seriously pining away for the smell of the earth and getting the seeds into the ground but it just wasn’t going to happen because The Viking was convinced we had to wait one more week and well he’s not usually wrong so I trust him on these matters. He is usually more in tune with the weather than I am and so we decided that the homestead’s a mess anyway and we best get busy cleaning so we did! On top of everything I was under the weather all weekend and it just got progressively worse but that’s life and I took a sick day and after some rest I am turning the corner and feeling like I am perking back up finally.
I sometimes call raking the yard sweeping the yard in North Carolina because of all our pine straw if you want your yard to look instantly cleaner all you need to do is get out there and rake up the pinecones and the straw. This is one of those tasks I have mixed emotions on I do like the instant gratification I don’t like the splinters in my hand from our rake. I also like to show you guys that our lil’ homestead looks downright homely about now…there are no beautiful flowers, we have very little coming up in the garden now but the exciting thing is this will all be transformed in a matter of weeks. Spring is officially almost here!
The chickens love following me and The Viking around when we are working in the yard….they love finding freshly dug up earth worms and other critters in the earth. They also love this time of year there is grass to eat and still lots to explore for them until the summer sun burns the grass up and we block them from the garden!
We finished the day sitting next to a nice toasty bonfire! I even roasted a marshmallow or two!
I wish you all a beautiful week….until next time!
Fondly,
I get jealous just thinking of all the people planting their gardens. I won’t be planting for awhile still yet.
Your growing & chicken area looks like it’s coming along nicely with all your cleaning efforts.
Blessings,
Thanks so much for coming over to visit…yes we will have just about everything planted for the first round this week! So excited can’t wait! although this morning is cold, gray and wet….sigh!
Isn’t that a song, “The sun will come out tomorrow?” LOL. Maybe you just need a day to rest before revving up? 🙂
Ha ha I love this! I did actually have to take a day off last to rest and recover it was just what the doctor ordered 😉
Spring cleaning a homestead seems to be a very difficult task. Me and my husband are planning to by a homestead next spring. We have found the perfect place for us. It is still running but the people that maintain it are too old for the work, so they want to sell it. I am very excited. I have three sons who love animals and are ready to work hard. I am happy to already learn how to spring clean a homestead! Thank you for sharing!
Norma I wish you the best of luck! Mine is a suburban homestead so the most difficult of tasks are keeping the bee hives monitored and the chicken coop clean but we are always canning, fermenting, so keeping the house decluttered and organized in a home that’s always “buzzing” is not an easy task. I am so happy for you and I hope you have a wonderful time on your new homestead 🙂 Happy New Year!
