Our Fleeting Fig Harvest & Farm Pears Coming in Hot!
Hello and happy end of summer from our Lil’ Suburban Homestead! Our fig season was so fast and fleeting this summer. The pears came in fast and hot this season, it was all we could do to keep up.
This is that time of the year when the Viking and I feel like it is so busy, but the truth of the matter is our garden is way busier than our calendars could ever be.
Everyday, when we get home to let the chickens out of the side yard, they have a routine to go to the back fence to hunt for elderberries. Some days they run right under the fig grove and look for their beloved sweet figs. They were delicious this summer, but they came in so fast this year that the figs had to be placed in the dehydrator before they went bad.
Figs Fizzled Out Quickly!
We did have a couple of evenings with fig, honey, and brie though for an appetizer or dessert and that is always special. I was bummed that the figs were fleeting and fizzled out so quickly as we had several friends we wanted to share them with.
Pears Coming in Hot!
In the meantime our farm pears have also been coming in and I had a hunch to check them the other day and I am so glad I did. I call them farm pears as they are typical of what you would find growing on a farm, the pears are not as sweet as what you get at the grocery store and they are harder and they seem to store longer. They went from being completely not ready to almost over ripe in just a couple of days. I was so glad we didn’t leave all of them to the wasps, who it seems pears and figs are a favorite!
This year we flash froze our pears on trays in the freezer. Because, they are farm pears and harder than what is typically in the grocery store, I think we are still going to be able to process them and pack them in light syrup. I will keep you all posted on this!
Cluck, Cluck, and in More Homestead News!
Just fyi…I mentioned in my last blog post that I would share photos about our chickens, The Gossip Gals enjoying the pool and here is a photo of them trying to get to some oats in the pool, but they overwhelmingly would rather take a dust bath to cool off then get in the pool lol…they certainly know their own minds.
Next up, we will be harvesting our pindo palm fruit, we made pindo palm jelly last year and it turned out quite delicious, although I would not say we have our recipe nailed down just yet!
We always enjoy hanging out with our Gossip Gals in the garden and we have more fall seeds to put in the garden this week. We have added two rasied bed gardens in front of the three raised beds in the back. We are almost done getting the fifth one filled with dirt and that will be the last one we plant for a bit.
I have also enjoyed trying my hand at making gluten free sour dough bread thissummer and I had pretty good success with my first one. I am continuing to work on perfecting that craft here and there as time permits!
I wish you all a beautiful week until next time!
Fondly,
