Our First Garlic Harvest
Our garlic dreams came true!
I am so excited to share with all of you that we finally had success with garlic and I have to shout out Sow True Seed in Asheville because we ordered our garlic from them and I have to give kudos to the Viking too as he goes out to the garden more than I do in the winter to check on our plant babies!
Yes! I went out into the garden and this is a mixture of the harvest that we pulled…some are the hard neck garlic and some our the soft neck garlic and I have to share that we made a pesto about of the garlic scapes which comes from the hard neck garlic already. Recipe to come soon!
If you did not know Garlic is loaded with phytochemicals which help increase immune function but I think what I love about it the most is the taste and the aroma…….it’s a regular part of my diet and now that we have had a great first success. We will plant double this amount next year because I can assure you that we will use it all up!
One of my favorite ways to eat garlic is to drizzle olive oil on it and completely enclose it in foil and eat it roasted. You can spread it on bread or gluten-free crackers. YUM! I also love to use garlic up in my homemade hummus you can read about both at my hummus recipe page. They are both delicious!
If anyone ever tells you that you can’t grow garlic in a warmer area don’t believe them we are in zone 8b you just have to do your research and use a reputable seed company and keep working at it. The key is having your soil amendment correct for your zone and area and the only way to really know that is to go visit your local agriculture department and have them test your soil. Utilize them as a resource that is what they do and in our case we used one of our NC resources the NC State South East Planting Guide (this is our gardening guidebook) to get the timing correct with our garlic but I think if we had gotten help from the experts first we would have had garlic before this and timing of the planting of garlic is crucial. They are experts for a reason LOL!
Garlic dreams do come true!
I wish you all a beautiful week….until next time!
That’s awesome Karen. My Father-in-law planted 1700 bulbs this season. We can’t wait to get our bunches and they last all year for us hanging in the garage in bunches.
Mr. CBB you have no idea how beyond excited I am and I must confess that my own home garlic is the BEST garlic I have ever eaten in my life! True story because their is something amazing about eating food you grow isn’t it? I am jealous about the volume you have access too but next year I am doubling my garlic efforts because I LOVE IT! I so appreciate the visit and I have been reading your blog quite a bit lately but I will update you soon…I am working on our finances and reorganizing some things. Always good to hear from you friend 🙂
