A Winter Tour of Our Garden

The deep freeze has set in upon us again in coastal, North Carolina, at least until Thursday. This is that time of year where I am grateful for the Viking keeping the home fires burning in the woodstove. However, now that I am snuggled up indoors, come take a winter tour of our garden with me.

It seemed to me that we had a colder winter than usual, but still our share of fake spring days that pop up where the sun almost convinces us that we are through the worst or at least the worst of winter is behind us. We have mild winters here in general, but I was genuinely surprised to see how well some of our plants fared in 20 degree weather.

The Cilantro Embraced the Cold

I was shocked to see both the cilantro and mint just fine after several nights of below freezing weather. The parsley in the photo below thrived and we actually had a myriad of greens to eat during this last cold snap, which we are not accustomed to.

Our Gardening Plans for 2023

We planted a bed of garlic with a variety of bulbs, but my favorite ones we planted were from a trade with a dear gardening friend of mine, that I have been in touch with for years. So excited to taste that garlic from Wisconsin.

Our garden will have a lot more diversity this year. We are adding a lot more peppers, more herbs, more edible grasses, and devoting more time to squashes and eggplants. Can’t wait!

The Chicks Arrive this Week

We have a project coming up where we are going to move our small garden shed, which will house our new chicken flock later this spring. Photographs of the chicks coming soon! So much excitement on our little homestead this year.

I wish you all a beautiful week! Until next time…

Fondly,

  1. Looking forward to spring here in southern Ontario!! Bought a new house last fall and it has room for us to garden!! We really didn’t have room at the old house but we do here and the younger son and I are thrilled, he will look after the veggies and I’ll work with the flowers. Food for body and soul!!

I Love Hearing From All Of You! Thanks for sharing!
